Eligibility Requirements and Application Procedures

 An applicant must: 

  • Be a promising music student with demonstrated music ability who is a high school student in either his or her junior or senior year in a public, private, or parochial school in the Washington, DC metropolitan area.
     
  • Plan to study music or have been accepted in a music program as a major or minor at a recognized or accredited institution of higher learning.
     

For scholarship consideration, please mail the following materials along with the completed application to THE ATTRUS C. FLEMING MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP FUND, PO Box 90213, Washington, DC  20090-0213:

   1)   A photograph (which will not be returned).

2)     A CD or audio cassette tape recording of performance, including two contrasting pieces which should not exceed a combined total of 15 minutes.  CDs and tapes will not be returned.

  3)   A letter of recommendation from a music teacher (including telephone number).

  4)   A character reference from a non-family member (including telephone number). 
 

Judging Guidelines
·         Annual competitions will be judged on either classical or jazz music styles in alternating yearsThe
      2009-2010 academic school year competition will be judged on
traditional or classic jazz acoustic
      piano performance only (not electronic keyboard).  A
pplicants can choose repertoire from
      any traditional or classic jazz standards.

       ·       Applicants for the 2009-2010 scholarship award must submit all required materials by the established
      deadline, Monday March 1, 2010.

       ·       Applicants who do not submit all required materials will be excluded from consideration.

       ·       Recordings of poor sound quality will be disqualified.

       ·       Three finalists will be selected and their performances evaluated by an independent panel of judges.

       ·       Judges retain the right for their decisions to be based on one of the following options:

    1. In-person performance by each finalist at a closed, private portion of the competition;
    2. Recorded performance of each finalist that was submitted at the preliminary stage of the competition (in unusual situations);

       ·       Each finalist must supply his or her own accompanist for the closed, private performance.

       ·       Judges retain the right to make no awards at all.

       ·       The decisions of the judges is final.
